LEAGUE MEMBERS UPDATE 30.04.08
-----------------------------------------------

Apologies for the delay, I've had to wait for the posted circular.

What an incredible day over at Firs, but before we get to that, congratulations to Wizards and Southgate Rovers who picked up the Jubilee Cup and Junior Challenge Cup. I did tip those two teams last week! Both looked like tight games on paper, with Southgate overcoming Tommy’s Bar after extra time. Congrats once again to both and commiserations to the runners up, Attitude and Tommy’s Bar.

So over at Firs, it was a highly eventful afternoon.

The Brigg Cup final has it’s participants, Thames North beat Southbury in a 9-goal thriller, running out 5-4 winners. In the other semi-final what could be considered an upset, as first division Village United beat second division champions, Clavisque 2-0. That semi-final saw a speedy and welcome return by George Grant who refereed the game.

The major story though came in the first division. Before the game, Travellers knew all they had to do was match or better Turf Moor’s result and they’d be champions. It must have been a highly emotional day for all concerned with Turf Moor as they arrived at Firs Farm knowing this would be their last ever league game.

With it being their last, Turf Moor wanted to go out in style and with half and eye on Rio battling Travellers they had to remain focused and win the game to have any chance of overtaking Travellers to win the league. Both Tudor and Moor were down to 10 men by half time and at the final whistle Turf Moor ran out 3-2 winners. During the afternoon both Travellers and Turf Moor must have been keeping in touch with one another’s games. Indeed, Turf Moor did know that Travellers had stormed into a 3-0 lead over Rio.

But as the full time whistle went for Turf Moor, news filtered through that Rio had pulled it back to 3-3! As half of Firs Farm congregated on Pitch 12, the roar was heard on the other side of the playing fields as Travellers became champions with a last minute winner over Rio. An incredible day for all concerned no doubt, and what a way for Travellers to win it. Honestly, we were playing on Pitch 6 and the roar of that goal going in stopped our game in it’s tracks for a second!

So Travellers are champions and they face Turf Moor in the Senior Challenge Cup this Sunday over at the Stadium.

Elsewhere, The Bell’s current run of poor form that has seen them lose two cup finals in as many weeks continued. Skyline beating them 3-1 in division five. In division four, Moray Arms put TEN past Southbury B as the Bull was doing the same to Hornsey Vale in division two. In division three, with teams awaiting the MC’s ruling on Enfield Patriots it’s all up in the air, but Downhills Park beat Enfield Monarchs 3-2 in what should see them seal promotion, but we’ll just have to wait and see on that one. One thing that is for sure in Division Three, Norfolk Old Boys are champions. Having won division five last season they win division three this season. Congrats to them.

A reminder that Continued Membership Forms need to be back with Dave Lyons by Sunday May 4th.

I'll update league and cup tables when I get a chance.
