Results of the Week | September 02 2007

Welcome to my first 'Results of the Week' article of the season. To the new-comers amongst the league, every week I post what I think are the eye-catching results. Obviously these are my own thoughts and have nothing to do with the league. It's just if I have the time, I'll spend 20 minutes writing this up for you all to read!

So here goes... The top 5 results from the opening weekend of the Edmonton & District Sunday Football League.

5. The Bell 7 Artesian 4
Last season in division four, The Bell finished like promotion candidates winning four of their last six games whilst Artesian were winless in their last three games. But The Bell were relegated and Artesian were promoted, so now the gulf between the two sides is two divisions as Artesian will battle it out in the third division and The Bell will look to bounce back out of the fifth division. But in what some would consider an upset - at least on paper - The Bell put SEVEN past Artesian in the Junior League Cup this week. These two teams always seem to have good games and this was no different. Eleven goals graced Pymmes Park this week and The Bell kick off their season in some style.

4. Southgate Rovers 4 Bricklayers Arms 1
Staying with the league cup and staying with an upset on paper. Third divisions Southgate Rovers upset the second division Bricklayers Arms with a resounding 4-1 victory to open up their junior league cup campaign with three points. Southgate Rovers are my tip for the third division this season. They finished behind Attitude and Wizards last season but then again, most teams would have.

3. Southbury 4 Thames North 1
Southbury have been around a while [close to 20 years!], and unfortunately for Thames North they began this season like they played the whole of last season. Southbury went up to division one as league champions and they'll look to upset more teams this season as they look to do a Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest and win back to back titles in different leagues. My tip for the first division are Turf Moor again! But could Southbury surprise a few people? We'll wait and see.

2. Earlsmead 2 Skyline 5
One of the leagues newest clubs Skyline were pitted against the leagues oldest club in Earlsmead at the beginning of the 2007/2008 season. It was fifth division versus fourth division and old versus new. The fifth division and the new stormed to victory as Skyline put five past Ray Delaney's Earlsmead. Not the best of starts for Earlsmead, but surely they will be concentrating on getting back to the third division this year. And as for Skyline? Well I'm sure they'll look to win every game that comes and with this morale boosting victory, who am I to argue?

1. Family United 1 Solar Way 9
Fair enough, Family United didn't exactly have the best of seasons last year but when they were relegated, some might have thought they'd bounce straight back up. The result of the week and their first games of the season saw new boys Solar Way batter the Family boys 9-1. It's easy to pick result of the week if teams do this every week, so please, help me out. Congratulations to Solar Way for introducing themselves to the league in some style.
